How to Use a Rollator

Overview

A rollator is a walking device used by the elderly or people with injuries. The device incorporates a frame with two canes on wheels, so the patient can lean on the handlebars while rolling forward during steps. The rollator also has a seat cushion in the front, so the patient is able to sit if he feels strained or dizzy.

Step 1

Place the handlebars in the top attachments of the rollator.Adjust the height so it meets your comfortability level. The handlebars should reach slightly below elbow-level.This allows you to lean without bending too far down.If the rollator handles are too high (above the elbow),it will not support you comfortably. Ensure both bars are at the same height.

Step 2

Push down the cross-member bar that connects the front and back bars. This stabilizes the two sections of the rollator to better support your weight.

Lock the brake by pushing the brake lever all the way down until you hear and feel it snap into place. This keeps the rollator from moving when standing up and balancing on the device.

Step 4

Place your weight onto the rollator while the rollator's brakes are locked. If you are in a sitting position, use the handlebars to balance while standing up. Lean on the handlebars once you are in the standing position.

Step 5

Pull the brake lever upward to remove it from the locked position. Use the rollator to walk by leaning forward on the handlebars and pushing the device forward. While leaning and pushing, take a step forward. The rollator moves with you and allows you to balance while walking.

Step 6

Use the seat by pushing down on the brake lever again until it locks into place.Use the handlebars to balance as you sit on the seat.Always keep the brakes locked when sitting on the rollator seat cushion.
